- The Battle of Cut Knife Hill (which is how town of Cut Knife
was named)
This battle was fought between the
Cree and Sarcee from the Blackfoot Confederacy in the 1840's at the
highest hill in the area. The invading Sarcee chief, Cut Knife (loosely
translated), was soundly defeated. The Cree appreciated his fighting
ability and named the local hill after him. One Sarcee warrior was able
to escape and returned home to tell the story. When
the town forefathers were looking for a name to call the settlement,
they chose the name of the hill that is the significant landmark to the
north. |
