1904 and the following years brought different cultures into the Cut Knife area. Often prairie immigrants settled close to people who shared their culture. And other times many people from different cultures also became neighbours and good friends. Italian immigrants came to the Baldwinton area. They created their own neighbourhood in the early years, retaining the language and customs. It was the schools that brought the children of these people together with others.
These one room country schools created a lot of memories for those who attended, taught or sent their children. They were centres of learning and community events. They formed the framework of local community for the years that they were open. Today's families still identify with the school district in which they live. At least for this generation. The next one will need to rely upon the records that we keep and the stories that we tell them.
It is sad that nearly all of these buildings are gone. The one pictured above is Wembley School as it looks in 2011. It is the only one room school that remains on the original site in the area.
We have used a present day method of location identification GPS (Global Positioning System) to help us quickly locate these places that were featured so prominently in our past.
This was done as a project for the Cut Knife Centennial in 2012. Our apologies for any errors in information and missing pictures. We will update as necessary, if you have photos or information.
